If P&C Insurance was founded in 1999, when the Swedish Skandia and Norwegian insurance company Storebrand were merged. In the beginning of 2002 the property and casualty insurance of Sampo merged with If. In 2004 Sampo acquired the shares of If previously in the possession of Skandia, Skandia Liv and Storebrand. If is a wholly subsidiary of Sampo Group, a Finnish listed company.

In June 2008 If P&C Insurance completed an acquisition of a Russian insurance company "Region". Through this acquisition If wants to gain a foothold in the Russian private customer market.
